I've been pretty excited about this movie since they first announced a "Days of Future Past" movie. I have been pretty disappointed of all the X-Men movies since "The Last Stand", it has been redeemed of course by "First Class", but never came close to the Marvel level of awesomeness. As Marvel started making these true comic book movies, the other studios got threatened and tried to up the ante, to us comic book lovers'delight. I then expected the new X-Men to be awesome.
I didn't rewatch the previous movies to prepare for this, I didn't feel the need to. I was right.
SPOILERS AHEAD.
The movie started off showing a dystopian world where mutants were being hunted and killed. A group of rebel mutants consisting of Shadowcat, Bishop, Colossus, Iceman, Warpath, Sunspot, and Blink are fighting off "Sentinels" (that looked pretty much like The Destroyer from Thor) to save their lives but are on a losing end. Kitty Pryde has found a way to send someone back in time to warn others and prevent things from happening. With the help of Professor X and Magneto, they devised a plan to send Wolverine back in time to stop Mystique from assassinating Bolivar Trask (Tyrion Lannister Peter Dinklage yeahhh!) that would pave the way for mutant annihilation.
They send Wolverine back in time to 1973 where he meets a young Beast and Professor X. After First Class, Xavier was paralyzed and now is taking a serum created by Beast which helps him walk but in turn strips him of his powers. This puts them in a tight spot as they needed his powers to locate Raven. They now sought the help of the man who Xavier loathed for taking Raven away from him, Magneto. Problem is, Erik is imprisoned in the most highly guarded building in the US, the Pentagon, for apparently killing JFK. Now Logan, Xavier and Hank enlisted the help of the fastest man (in Marvel) for the prison break.
We see the young Quicksilver renamed as Peter Maximoff who happily agrees with the plan just for the thrill of it. What follows is, in my opinion, the best part of the movie. The speedster with his wit and adorable gestures is a fun portrayal of the character. A far cry from his comic counterpart. If you can tell, I hate Quicksilver in the comics as much as I love everyone else in the Eisenhardt family (aka Magneto's spawn). Here you can't help but love and cheer for him while he defeats the guards in an almost still-time-slow-motion playful way AND to the tune of Time in a Bottle. Hahaha deffo shining moment.
After that stint, the movie has gone to the dark tone the X-Men has been famous for. Battle after battle, from the past and the future, the X-Men fight with what they have for the mutants' survival. As Xavier pleaded Raven to do the right thing, she follows him and does not shoot. This action changed the current future and Logan wakes up to the Mansion and all is well again. Even seeing old friends alive.
The mutants are saved. The future has changed. Everyone is happy. Until the after credits *wink wink*
END PLOT SUMMARY.
Overall, I loved the movie. It was great! Not mind-blowing, but great nonetheless. The Avengers is still better. Maybe I was nitpicking a lot and comparing it to the cartoon/comics that's why I say so. The slight inconsistencies irked me, and made me question a lot. This is the downside of expecting too much of a story I hold in high regard. I didn't care if they don't follow the comics, as long as the formula is there: dystopian future, time-traveller, stopping of the assassination, and the future changed (or didn't it?). I listed below my questions, and I've answered them myself.
1st: How in the world can Kitty send someone back in time?!
Apparently, Kitty now has the ability of time phasing. Where she acquired it was not explained, possibly from new mutation. They used Kitty as this was a nod to the original comic story where an older Kate Pryde was the one sent back in time to stop Mystique. Hugh Jackman is the star of the franchise thus he's the one doing the travelling in this movie.
2nd: Mystique did the right thing, really?
Mystique is an anti-hero for this franchise.
3rd: Mystique can't copy powers! How'd the Sentinels adapt?
If Kitty can time-phase, why can't Mystique copy powers?
4th: Why is Quicksilver named Peter, not Pietro?
They made Quicksilver American, and his real mom is a Maximoff rather than Quicksilver being adopted.
5th: Where is the Scarlet Witch?!
Quicksilver is shown to have a brunette haired younger sister. It can't be her since they're twins. Can't be Polaris too coz she's not a Maximoff. We'll see.
6th: I hate Quicksilver, he's a jerk.
Evan Peters made me love Quicksilver in this movie. Thumbs up to you.
7th: How come Quicksilver dresses like it's not the 70s? He even has those cool headsets.
Coz why not? He stole the show. And the outfit works with 3D.
I have more but I need to sleep. I'll post more later and compare it with the comics.
So, what's your verdict for the X-Men: Days of Future Past?

May the 4th be with you!
We went to Legoland yesterday and was hoping we could see a lot of Star Wars miniature. Unfortunately, all we saw were meh guys in costume although Queen Amidala was pretty spot on. After that parade, there was really nothing else to this Star Wars celebration, maybe today (May 4) they will have more activities and more figures. There should be a Star Wars themed ride but will open in September 2014. Wish I'll still be here when it opens. :)
On our way home, me and my friends just talked about the Old Republic which I pledged I will start reading as I've always been curious of Darth Revan.
And so to culminate the day, I'm going to put on the Star Wars Theme, download Old Republic novels, show either A New Hope or Clone Wars on tv, and use the force to feed me.
May the 4th be with you!!! Happy Star Wars day!!!
The Amazing Spider-Man 2
I just had to say something about this movie which I can't fit into a tweet -- I ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT!!!! Well that line could be tweeted, (obviously haha :P) but why I loved it can't be explained in mere 140 characters.
I have been anticipating this movie since the start of the year. When I went to the cinema May 1, I was thrilled to the point of non-stop smiling. I felt like a kid again opening a bunch of Marvel cards I just bought and finding a new character card(you know how exciting that could be). I loved these movies. I grew up with these stories. And although I never expected anything else out of this movie than reliving the stories I knew, never did I imagine that I was in for a ride...
The movie was, ahem, AMAZING! The opening shot of Spider-man was GORGEOUS! He was falling from the skies with his back spider logo showing in the screen, and I just thought "WOW". The whole web-swinging sequence was showing the audience that this is how it feels to be Spider-man: dangerous, exciting, risky, overwhelming, beautiful. Andrew Garfield was a natural Peter Parker/Spider-man. The villains were adequate but they made it work. (Sorry Jamie Foxx, wala kay angay ma-nerd.. i'll always picture you as a cool type of guy.. And Dane DeHaan is a great actor BUT I just saw clips from Kill Your Darlings and I can only picture him kissing Daniel Radcliffe XP). But yeah, they made it work. The love story is cute (Emma Stone is adorable as always). The music score was great, I loved the Electro theme. The CGI was jaw-dropping (as mentioned previously of the opening sequence) and the fight, ohhhhhh the fight scene was stunning. But what really got me was the story of how Gwen, you know, died.. IT FELT ALMOST EXACTLY LIKE THE COMICS! I didn't tear up though, I already knew they would put it in this movie, but I still felt sad. There goes Spidey's true love. Bye Gwen. Okay back to topic...
There were also a few moments I didn't like, such as the pacing was at times slow. Norman Osborne never became the first Green Goblin which deviated from the story. And that Jorge kid goin' in the battlefield was too stooooopid and cheesy, albeit pivotal in the story. :P But these few things did nothing to ruin the movie. And I liked that.
The reason why I'm writing this? Coz it's 3am in the morning and I have no one to talk to about Spider-man. I really want to watch it again, in 3D. I just can't get over the movie yet lol. I'm trying so hard to decide if I'd place this as my Top 2 favorite Marvel movie replacing Raimi's Spider-man 2 which is saying something as I really loved the vs Doc Ock movie. Ask me again in 2 months after I rewatch it on a tv screen to know if it will keep its current standing.
I see that a lot of these movies will be made in the upcoming years and that really makes me happy. I've invested a lot already on these stories that they're already a part of me, and seeing them being taken out of the movie peeps' imagination and portrayed correctly on the big screen is the closest it would be as to having me imagine them on my own. I can't wait for X-Men: Days of Future Past, and even Guardians of the Galaxy. They're gonna be awesome for sure!
All Marvel needs to do is make that INHUMANS movie faster and everything will be AWESOME! Oh, and can we have that Deadpool movie already Fox?? Might as well hand him back to Marvel (now THAT would be PERFECT!). :)
